Melancholy Play
By Sarah Ruhl
Produced by Whitney Barrett
Directed by Clara Phillips
Tilly’s melancholy is of an exquisite quality. She turns her melancholy into a sexy thing, and every stranger she meets falls in love with her. One day, inexplicably, Tilly becomes happy, and wreaks havoc on the lives of her paramours. Frances, Tilly’s hairdresser, becomes so melancholy that she turns into an almond. It is up to Tilly to get her back.
Melancholy Play uses language in an untraditional way: many scenes and monologues are written in poetry. The show also follows an absurd plot. Among other things, a character turns into an almond, and the others endeavor to save her! There are two unprompted and unexplained musical numbers as well as musical scoring throughout the play (in this production, the music was original composition for the cello).
